This time of the year can wreak havoc on your sinuses. Oftentimes, it gets bad enough to warrant a visit your physician. Generally, antibiotics are prescribed in this scenario. Just like an automobile needing preventative maintenance, a little preventative maintenance regarding your sinuses can go a long way.
A great, all-natural way to help your sinuses feel and perform better is by the use of a neti pot. A neti pot is an instrument used to perform nasal irrigation. It is a personal hygiene practice where the nasal cavity is washed – usually with a tepid saline solution to flush out excess mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses. Nasal cleansing began as an ayurvedic medicine technique in ancientIndia. The practice is generally well-tolerated and beneficial with only minor side effects.
Thanks to some good press from Dr. Oz and other health care providers, neti pots have moved from the back shelves of health food stores to mainstream chains like CVS and WalMart. There are many different “styles” of neti pots available on the internet too. I suggest choosing a basic design. Make sure you use a non-iodized salt such as sea or kosher salt.
Using a neti pot is inexpensive, easy to use and effective. What have you got to lose? The first time you use a neti pot, it will seem weird to be standing over the sink with you head bent over and a stream of water coursing through your head. But, once you try it and see how it makes your sinuses feel, I guarantee you, you will like the results.
