Office FaceliftThe Office/Check-In area received a facelift in February.  Also, new furniture arrived for the RedBud and Hickory Hollow cabins.  Next week, Terry and Steve begin a full renovation of the Strong Wolf cabin.  It will be closed down most of March.

Nicole McCabe Guest Services ManagerAfter several weeks of interviewing, we decided to promote from within for our Guest Services Manager position.  We are excited that Nicole McCabe has joined our team fulltime.  Some of our guests have had the pleasure of receiving a massage from Nicole and others have seen her friendly face at check in.

From Randy, our Spa Manager, here are some good tips for would-be spa goers.
When coming for your spa treatment, it is always best not to wear an excessive amount of make-up of perfume.

While some guests prefer to schedule an appointment for someone else and “surprise them”, sometimes it is not the best idea.  Occasionally, a “surprise massage” is not as well accepted as the giver had hoped.  If you want to surprise them, I suggest you give them some forewarning so they can mentally prepare and be relaxed when they arrive.

Deals, deals and more deals!  If you aren’t connected to facebook and twitter with us you might want to think twice.  Weekly, we are offering special deals that you can only find there.  Connect here today at Facebook and twitterWant to post a blog after your stay with us, go here.

Therapists Spa Training

When you finally get your massage license, your education is really just beginning. Ongoing training is important for our therapists at the Spa at Cedar Falls.  On February 27th, the therapists learned a new technique: The Rejuvenating Facelift Massage.  All of the therapists gave and received a treatment.  Everyone agreed it was one of the best things we’ve learned in a long time.  We plan on taking what we learned and incorporating it into our existing facial massage routine.  Just wait til you come and get one!!

Got Sinus Problems? Try a Neti Pot

February 21st, 2012 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

By: Randall Wellman, LMT, MSNeti Pot

This time of the year can wreak havoc on your sinuses.  Oftentimes, it gets bad enough to warrant a visit your physician. Generally, antibiotics are prescribed in this scenario.  Just like an automobile needing preventative maintenance, a little preventative maintenance regarding your sinuses can go a long way.

A great, all-natural way to help your sinuses feel and perform better is by the use of a neti pot.  A neti pot is an instrument used to perform nasal irrigation.  It is a personal hygiene practice where the nasal cavity is washed – usually with a tepid saline solution to flush out excess mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses. Nasal cleansing began as an ayurvedic medicine technique in ancientIndia. The practice is generally well-tolerated and beneficial with only minor side effects.

Thanks to some good press from Dr. Oz and other health care providers, neti pots have moved from the back shelves of health food stores to mainstream chains like CVS and WalMart.  There are many different “styles” of neti pots available on the internet too.  I suggest choosing a basic design.  Make sure you use a non-iodized salt such as sea or kosher salt.

Using a neti pot is inexpensive, easy to use and effective.  What have you got to lose?  The first time you use a neti pot, it will seem weird to be standing over the sink with you head bent over and a stream of water coursing through your head.  But, once you try it and see how it makes your sinuses feel, I guarantee you, you will like the results.

Using Sprouts

February 20th, 2012 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

By Randall Wellman, LMT, MS

To obtain greatest nutritional value from your sprouts, use them right out of the container.  Put them on salads, sandwiches, garnish soup. Raw sprouts are also very crunchy and very delicious. Your sprouts can be stored in the refrigerator.

A Yummy Recipe of Mine!

It is my twist on “Deb’s on Black”; a staple on the menu at Whole World Bakery and Café in the Columbus suburb of Clintonville:

  • ½ Avocado
  • Swiss cheese
  • Handful of sprouts
  • Fresh tomatoes
  • Your favorite bread
  • Mustard and/or mayo to taste

Make a grilled cheese sandwich. Open it up and lay on the sliced avocado, tomatoes, and the sprouts. Dress with mayo and mustard.

Making Your Own Sprouts

February 13th, 2012 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

Randall Wellman, LMT, MS

Sprouts can be purchased at the grocery or health food store, but making them at home is simple and easy.  You know your sprouts are fresh when you are eating them right out of the jar!  You can use anything from a wide mouthed mason jar to an expensive sprouting set-up.  The instructions are the same.

  • Seeds, and beans for sprouting are available at health food stores, grocery stores and online.  All types of single seeds and beans as well as pre-mixed varieties available for purchase.
  • About ¼ cup of seeds placed in your container will just about fill it when everything is sprouted.  Fill the container with lukewarm water and leave 6-8 hours.
  • Drain the water from the jar and place it in a non-drafty, non-sunny place.
  • Rinse the seeds every 12 hours. Be sure to drain well after each rinse.
  • Once sprouting begins put the jar into sunlight.
  • In a day or so, your sprouts will be ready.
