Winter Hiking in the Hocking Hills

January 9th, 2011 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

Next weekend Hocking Hills State Park will celebrate its 46th Annual Winter Hike! Taking place on January 15, this popular event brings more than 5,000 people to the area and is a free event for the whole family.

Hike the Hills and then learn to photograph them with Jim Crotty's 'Winter Light in the Hocking Hills' workshop.

The historic annual hike covers the 6-mile trail from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave, which is better known as the ‘Grandma Gatewood Trail’. Grandma Gatewood was the first woman to walk the Appalachian Trail, at the age of 67 no less. Hiking the trail again two more times, plus hiking the Oregon Trail from Missouri to Oregon, Grandma Gatewood always said that this 6-mile section of the Hocking Hills was her favorite.

With snow covering the hills and gorges, January can certainly be one of the most beautiful times to visit the area. And the Annual Winter Hike is the perfect opportunity to experience the rugged trails and frozen waterfalls.

The park offers continuous starts from 9am-11am at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor’s Center and shuttles are provided to transport hikers from Ash Cave back to Old Man’s Cave.

When you are done with the hike, warm up in front of the fire in one of our cabins or cottages, relax with a massage in our spa, and enjoy a delicious dinner in our award-winning restaurant.

The Grandma Gatewood Trail

July 19th, 2010 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

The Inn is lucky enough to be located on one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Ohio. This trail is also what recently brought Mark Turner to the Inn on his Walk Across America.

The Grandma Gatewood Trail is part of the American Discovery Trail, a coast-to-coast hiking and biking trail spanning the United States. Starting on the Delmarva Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and ending on the Northern California coast, the American Discovery Trail covers more than 5,000 miles and is the only non-motorized coast-to-coast trail.

The Grandma Gatewood Trail is a six-mile section of the American Discovery Trail and connects Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave. The trail is named after Emma Rowena Gatewood, known as Grandma Gatewood. Grandma was an extreme hiker who, at the age of 67, left her home to hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955. She hiked it again in 1960 and 1963, and in 1959 hiked the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri to Portland, Oregon.

Grandma Gatewood always stated that her favorite hike was that 6-mile stretch in the Hocking Hills. She led the first Winter Hike, and continued to lead it for the next 12 years, missing only one before her death in 1973.

Summer and fall are excellent times to experience the beauty that Grandma Gatewood appreciated in the Hocking Hills. Come out for a visit and see for yourself! Enjoy a weekend or weekday stay at the Inn – we’re right on the trail!

Summer Fun In The Hocking Hills

June 4th, 2010 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

The summer has begun in the Hocking Hills and there seems to be no end to the fun! One blog post simply wasn’t enough to highlight all that is going on over the next couple of weeks so here are some more great events to be a part of!

Join the naturalists at the Campground at Hocking Hills State Park to take a closer look at the not-so-mythical dragonflies and damselflies. These flying, crawling and swimming insects lead an amazing life and this is your opportunity to peak in on them. Meet at the main playground in the camp at 2:00pm on June 10th and take a short stroll down to Rose Lake.

Make a trip down to Conkles Hollow at 9:00pm that evening for Owl Prowl. Join naturalists at the park area for a closer look and listen to some of Ohio’s most elusive and fascinating creatures.

If you are looking for a more hands-on activity, Julie Davis of Columbus Audubon will be leading Birding by Kayak on Saturday, June 12th at 4:30-7:30pm or Sunday, June 13th from 7:30-10:30am. Experience the nooks and crannies of serene waterways in search of birds large and small.

And for those who love interesting and unusual music, the 10th anniversary of The Washboard Music Festival will take place Father’s Day weekend. Located in downtown Logan, Ohio’s Most Unique Music Festival features events, a children’s park with rides, and of course lots of great music.

We hope you’ll join us in the Hocking Hills this month! The Inn is located right in the heart of the Hocking Hills and hiking distance from all that the Hills have to offer.
