It is commonly ta
ught by Western medicine that if we don’t have symptoms, we are not sick. Ironically, once symptoms appear, sometimes it is too late.
To truly understand health and wellness we need to explore their definitions. The World Health Organization states that health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Webster’s dictionary adds that health is a state of 100% function – function of the body, its organs, tissues, and cells.
If health is defined as function, then sickness is defined as a lack of function. Just as darkness is a lack of light. On a sunny day, you open the windows and light rushes into the room; the darkness does not flood the outside. To remove darkness, you must increase the amount of light. In health, you cannot remove sickness, you must increase health.
It is a loss of health that makes us have sickness or pain. The 3 things that make us lose health are the way we move, the way we eat, and the way we think. It is these, and only these, 3 things that make you healthy again!
The way we move is not just exercise or lack thereof. It is HOW we move. Do our joints work as they should? Does our spine offer protection to the nervous system? The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves. Every function is dictated by the nervous system. If health is 100% function, and it is the brain and nervous system’s job to make things function at 100%, the communication of the nervous system is critical to health. Exercise is essential to improving health.
What we eat is the second way to lose health. Things we eat are either pure and sufficient, or toxic and deficient. There really is no gray area here. Either the food is good or it is bad. Generally speaking, if people have messed with it, it is bad. This includes packaged food, non-organic food, etc. If you eat well at least 50% of the time, you are doing much better than most.
The way we think is often overlooked, but it can be a key contributor to poor health. Genetically we are designed to be healthy, but unfortunately we all have stress. When environmental factors cause an adaptation of the genetic code, we become ill. Combating emotional stress is critical to regaining health. To do this, you have to do something that most of us don’t do – sit down and take a few minutes for yourself. Turn off the phone, the computer, the TV, and sit in quiet with a great book. Do this and it will change your life.
