Cantwell Cliffs

Compared to many of the other trails, Cantwell Cliffs is one of the most remote trails in Hocking Hills State Park. It is the least visited of the Hocking Hills State Park attractions, but it has some of the park’s most beautiful features.

Cantwell Cliffs was named after a pioneer named Joseph Cantwell. The cliffs stand approximately 150 feet high and overlook Buck Run. A waterfall from Buck Run also flows over a portion of the cliffs. Hikers can either traverse the trails of the valley floor or the rim. If you choose the one mile hike to the East Rim Trail you will be rewarded by a scenic view of the cliff and rock shelter at Lookout Point. One of the well known interesting points of the trail is “Fat Woman’s Squeeze” a narrowing path between rock formations.

Although it’s relatively short, the Cantwell Cliffs hiking trail can be a challenging way to spend an hour and a half. During springtime, Ohio wildflowers are in abundance at Cantwell Cliffs. Cantwell Cliffs is located off of S.R. 374, near the community of Rockbridge where there is an impressive natural rockbridge. Cantwell Cliffs is the closest of all the Hocking Hills State Parks to Columbus, Ohio.
