Conkles Hollow
Conkle’s Hollow is located in an Ohio State Nature Preserve in the Hocking Hills State Park. The steep sandstone cliffs, carved from Black Hand sandstone, rise nearly 200 feet above the valley floor. Conkle’s Hollow was named for W.J. Conkle, who carved his name and the date 1797 into the Black Hand sandstone on the west wall of the gorge.
Conkle’s Hollow’s valley floor is lushly covered by a profusion of native plants, wildflowers, and hardwood forests. It is magnificent in the spring time. The trail leading up the narrow is a half-mile long ravine surrounded by vertical cliffs rising over 200 feet above. Hikers desiring more of a challenge may want to try the rim trail on top of the cliffs which circles the gorge. This trail has some of the prettiest views in the Hocking Hills during the fall season.
The rim trail at Conkle’s Hollow is 2 1/2 miles long. It takes about 2 hours to hike this upper trail. The lower trail is about a mile and takes about one hour to hike.
Conkle’s Hollow is located south of Logan, Ohio off State Rte 664 and State Rte 374, on Big Pine Rd. It’s about five minutes from Old Man’s Cave. Visitors will find this trail handicapped accessible. Make sure you follow the Nature Preserve Rules and Regulations that have been posted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. You cannot take pets in this Ohio State Nature Preserve.
