May-June INNformation at Cedar Falls

April 23rd, 2013 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

Dear Friends,

Spring has arrived.  Flowers are blooming, the birds are building their nests and the bees are buzzing.  This is the best time of year to see the waterfalls at their fullest.

In our last update, we informed you about Innkeepers Terry and Ellen selling their Hocking Hills home.  The good news is, they’ve sold it.  Instead of being nestled in the woods, they will be surrounded by Buckeye Lake.  They are sizing down and moving to their lake cottage.   They will work from home a day or two each week. Since they will drive a little further to get to the Inn, they may even spend the night at the Inn once or twice a week. Rest assured,  they will still be fully and actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the Inn, and continue to look forward to visiting with you at breakfast.

Employee of the yearMisty Rigney was selected as our 2012 Employee of the Year.  She was nominated for employee of the month many times.   Some examples of her “above and beyond the call of duty” are stayed after hours to help set up for a group, fixed many maintenance issues by herself and received accolades from guests for her outstanding customer service.  Misty won a two night stay at a Select Registry inn and $250 in spending money for her trip. Innkeeper Ellen says “Misty is the warm voice who greets our guests on the phone and at check in.  We are delighted that Misty won this award.”

New PatioThere is a new look to our Outdoor Patio. Terry and Steve added a roof to part of the patio.  With added lights, fans and heaters, guests will be able to dine outside longer at night and sit outside earlier in the spring and fall.  The tavern will extend its hours for guests who want to enjoy an after dinner drink and stay outside longer on the patio or around the fire circle.

DogGoneDealA “Dog Gone” Good Deal for you and your furry friend!  Stay one night Sun-Thurs in our dog friendly cottage.  Our Paw Prints gift pack awaits your arrival and your dog stays for FREE.   While your dog can’t come to the restaurant to eat, you can.  Join us for a delectable four course dinner and a hearty breakfast the next morning.  A hiking map is provided to help you plan a walk for the family.  All this for $299.  It does not include tax or gratuity or holidays and is valid until Sept 1, 2013.

Military man and wife find respite from world’s woes

April 22nd, 2013 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

Longtime married couple Julie and Jeff first visited us at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls in 2011 after a friend recommended this hideaway as the perfect way to escape life’s hustleDogwood and bustle. After a scenic drive from Michigan, the two pulled up to Dogwood, one of our secluded cabins that offers a respite from the world here in
Ohio’s stunning Hocking Hills.
According to Julie, our gorgeous fall weather, combined with the cozy cabin, left her and her husband feeling as if they’d stepped into a wonderful dream.  In fact, after their first stay, they were hooked.  Before leaving for home that October, they booked another stay for just a month later to join us for Thanksgiving dinner.  Ever since, the pair has spent Thanksgiving at the Inn.

“Every time we visit, the Inn compresses all of our relaxation desires into one unforgettable stay,” said Julie.

Jeff serves our country in the U.S. military and is stationed in Afghanistan, which would be stressful for any couple.  So the pair makes it a point to visit to the Inn before each deployment.   The Inn staff and its owners are grateful to Jeff for his service and we’re honored that they choose us to help them unwind and bond.  “Taking that special time together is essential for any marriage”, Julie said.  “It’s important for us to get back to the romance. Day-to-day life sometimes forces couples toGrandma Gatewood Trail take each other for granted; it’s vital for two people to get away to reconnect.”

When we asked Jeff and Julie to describe the Inn, three words came to mind: Heaven on Earth.  “This is not your chain hotel.” said Julie. “The atmosphere is so personal and totally unlike a touristy resort. If you are looking for high-end quality in a really natural and peaceful setting, this is it!”
Terry's Birthday at Gervasi Inn            Julie encourages and anyone who hasn’t visited to do so right away, adding that the owners and staff of the Inn are personable and always go out of their way to meet their requests and make their stay extra special.  According to Julie, escaping Internet and phones allows them to truly disconnect from distractions of the outside world.   ”We truly feel alone here.  We even like to bring our dog, Ginger, so it’s as if we’ve come home.”

The couple fell so in love with the Inn that they decided to bring the Inn home with them.  They purchased the same fine-quality sheets and bathrobes the Inn offers guests, from the gift shop.

“But really, we wish we could just pack up our lives in Michigan and live at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, said Julie.  “The Inn is our favorite vacation spot.  You simply have to see it to believe it.”

At the Inn, we pride ourselves in having a large vegetable garden which provides our restaurant with many of its fresh offerings  throughout the summer and fall. Our gardener extraordinaire, Kellie, takes great care in planting the garden each year, and this year we are offering you an opportunity to learn from her!

On garden 1Tuesday, May 21, at 10:00 a.m., join Kellie in the garden and help to prepare and plant all of the vegetables for the Inn. In return for your hard work, we’ll provide you with a delicious lunch made by Chef Anthony.

Planting with Kellie is a free event and is, of course, weather permitting (though Kellie has been known to work in a light rain).

Join us in the Hocking Hills where spring is in the air and it’s planting season! All are welcome, Enjoy!

March-April INNformation at Cedar Falls

February 26th, 2013 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

Dear Friends,

CedarFalls-Seasons-Spring-a-05Spring in with the roar of the lion with waterfalls at their fullest followed by early, delicate wildflowers like the fur of a baby lamb. It’s amazing that kid’s spring breaks are already beginning. Plan your family time away with your children. Lots of moms bring their daughters to enjoy time for just the two of them.

Benjamin, (Ellen and Terry’s son), will be home the first full week of March from NC State. Ben and Terry are installing a new bathroom shower with tile as well as new tile floor at TreeHouse. Also, they will extend the bar in the Spirits Tavern. Makes more room for our guests to enjoy an early drink before dinner or a soothing after dinner drink. In early March, we are installing new carpet at the spa and the bedroom at the Dogwood cabin.

Spring brings the restaurant out in full force. Chef Anthony has a delectable lunch and dinner menu. Also, effective March 11 we begin serving  lunch 7 days.

Discounts galore for you! Check out the specials. You will discover 25% off on March 10, 20 and April 15. And, a whopping 30% off on April 1, and that’s no April Fool’s joke!

FreeCycleINNThe Inn staff continues to look for new ways for us to enhance our GreenInn projects. The committee is spearheaded by spa director Randy Wellman and includes Nicole, Mary, Erica, Kellie and Terry. The Inn is excited to announce its FreeCycle Inn program. Freecycling is when a person passes on, for free, an unwanted item to another person who needs that item. From silverware to mobile homes, people worldwide are choosing to freecycle rather than discard. The practice frees up space in landfills and cuts down on the need to manufacture new goods. Thousands of groups dedicated to connecting people who want to give away something to people with a need are forming worldwide and the Inn is excited to be involved. A variety of items including tired, sinks, and couch have already been exchanged to a good home. Maybe you should start one in your workplace!

house frontSome of you may remember that Ellen and Terry purchased an 1100 sq ft cottage at Buckeye Lake. Originally, the plan was to use it as a retreat on weekends. However, with all the renovations and liking the idea of sizing down and decluttering (not to mention the view of the lake), they have decided to move to the lake full time. They will commute to the inn as it’s only an hour’s drive. So, they are putting their family home up for sale. They will list it with a realtor mid-March if no one is interested prior to that time. Ideally located only 3 miles from 33 on 664 South (yet secluded from view of the road), it is a cedar sided home nestled on 11 acres. It has 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, two car garage, workshop and pole building. Contact Terry at t_lingo59@yahoo.com for more details.

“Chef for a Day” immerses guests in culinary experience

February 18th, 2013 by Innkeeper, Inn & Spa At Cedar Falls

After our “Innkeeper for an Afternoon” offering was a sellout last year, we’ve just added a new “Chef for a Day” program, launched to allow you to try your hand running the Inn kitchen.

Chef Anthony Schulz

Led by Executive Chef Anthony Schulz, you can become chef for a day, with classes taking place from 1-5 p.m. most days by advance reservation.  You’ll enjoy a private, four-hour, one-on-one cooking class, tastings and dinner, plus take home the day’s menu, a copy of an Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls cookbook and apron.

The program takes place in the Inn kitchen, where you’ll help Chef Anthony prepare evening dinner service, while you gain specialized training in everything from prepping veggies to making desserts and properly designing a menu.

Already, Chef for a Day is receiving rave reviews from early attendees like Tod and Mary Beckett of Columbus.

“It was so great that we immediately booked a cooking class with Anthony that the Inn was hosting at Hills Market in Columbus.  And we brought ten friends with us,” Mary said.

“We really did this Tod, who is a foodie, but rarely gets to cook because he works such long hours and I usually do the cooking at home,” she said. “But he just loved it.  It was so great to see him learn to separate an egg.  He had never separated an egg!  He had never made a crème brûlée.  But he learned how and did it all that day at the inn.”

Chef for a Day

Chef Anthony added that Chef for a Day is a great way to bring couples or friends together, especially if one person cooks and the other does not.

“They experience what it’s really like behind the lines.  Students learn classic technique, but in an approachable way, and they can ask questions along the way.  Then, they enjoy one of the best meals of their lives, while seeing other guests enjoy the meal that they helped prepare. It’s very gratifying for them.”

If you’d like to become Chef for a Day, just call (800) 653-2557.
