This once local secret is now available for public viewing and definitely worth a spot on your vacation itinerary!

About Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

While Corkscrew Falls is not among the most visited attractions, people who have seen the falls have admitted it is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire park! Just a few years ago, the 10-foot waterfall rested on private property and was unavailable to the public. Today, visitors with a permit are able to view the falls and all of its natural splendor. Corkscrew Falls is a part of the 607-acre Boch Hollow Nature Preserve, so you know you’ll see plenty of beautiful sights and wildlife along the way.

Corkscrew Falls, Ohio Permit

Due to the area’s fragile ecosystem, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires a permit for all Corkscrew Falls visitors. Luckily, these permits are very easy to acquire. Simply visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s website for permit guidelines and applications. Please note that these permits can take up to 30 days to process, so plan accordingly and apply in advance!

How to Find Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

You’ll find the trailhead for Corkscrew Falls at the corner of Zwinkle Road and OH-664. If you’re in need of parking, you’ll find a small paved shoulder nearby. The beginning of the half mile trail is marked by a sign that reads “This is Ohio Dept of Natural Preserves property. You must have a permit to be on this land.” From here, follow the trail down the creek. A large rock wall will keep you on the trail, so you won’t have to worry about getting lost. Once you reach the falls, you may enter the knee-deep water to capture the perfect photo.

As one of Ohio’s most stunning natural attractions, it’s no surprise that Old Man’s Cave is also one of the most popular places to visit in Hocking Hills State Park.  This recess cave is surrounded by towering cliffs, beautiful waterfalls, challenging hiking trails, and the incredible Devil’s Bathtub. With so much to do in the vicinity, many visitors search for accommodations near the cave. If you’re one of those visitors, you’re in luck!  The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is located less than two miles away and offers a variety of Old Man’s Cave cabins for you to choose from. These Hocking Hills getaway cabins are perfect for romantic and family vacations in Ohio, and we’re sure you’ll agree!

If you’ll be staying in one of our Old Man’s Cave Cabins at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, you won’t want to be without our free Hocking Hills Vacation Guide!  It’s filled with all the best things to do in the area including dining, shopping, museums, and more.

About Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave derives its name from Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived under the rock shelter in the early 1800s. His family moved to Ohio from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Shortly after, Richard stumbled upon the Hocking Region while traveling along the Scioto River.

He lived out his life in the area and is buried beneath the ledge of the main recess cave.

Other residents of the cave were two brothers, Nathaniel and Pat Rayon, who came to the area in 1795. Both brothers are buried near the cave. Old Man’s Cave also served as a stopover for the Shawnee Indians on their route from West Virginia to villages along the Scioto River.

2 of the Best Things to Do at Old Man’s Cave

  1. Hiking

The Old Man’s Cave area can be divided into five sections: Upper Falls, Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, and Lower Gorge. The magnificent gorge cuts through Blackhand sandstone and serves an opportunity for visitors to peer into the earth’s subsurface. The main hiking trail starts at the Welcome Center and takes a relatively straight route through the gorge to Old Man’s Cave. The trail then continues to the Sphinx Head and Overlook rock formations. Whispering Cave, one of the Hocking Hills’ newest attractions, is also accessible from the hiking trails. With plenty of man-made steps and bridges along the way, this route is a relatively easy stroll for visitors of all skill levels.

  1. Annual Events

If you’re planning to visit Ohio in the winter, make plans to attend the annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike. This guided six-mile trek takes hikers from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave and features plenty of fascinating stories along the way. Layered clothing and good footwear are recommended.

About Our Old Man’s Cave Cabins

Just a couple miles from Old Man’s Cave, our collection of 5 Hocking Hills getaway cabins is perfect for your romantic escape or family getaway.  The original 1840’s log cabins are nestled deep in the woods and each boast their own two acres. You’ll hardly find a more peaceful and authentic cabin experience. Three sides of our inn are bordered by Hocking Hills State Park, meaning there are many incredible places to explore just minutes from our door. Most of our guests come to see us for the nearby forests, trails, and attractions in the park, including the Cantwell Cliffs. While the journey to the cliffs is approximately half a mile, we guarantee that once you get there, you’ll agree that the trip was well worth it.

Find an abundance of trails and other attractions like the Cantwell Cliffs in our free Hocking Hills State Park Guide! This downloadable planning tool is filled with places to see, helpful maps, and more!

Why You Should See the Cantwell Cliffs During Your Visit

In order to reach the Cantwell Cliffs, visitors must endure a 40-minute hike through the park. However, many find that the journey to the cliffs is half the fun! With stunning wildflowers (especially in the spring), and a variety of local trees lining the path, you’ll have plenty to look at during the hike.

When you arrive at the cliffs, the astonishing beauty is sure to steal your breath away! You will see the erosion caused by Buck Run River, a rock shelter, beautiful valley floor, and fascinating reddish-brown stone. Cantwell Cliffs are also the home of Fat Woman’s Squeeze in the Hocking Hills. This walkway is part of a rugged trail near the cliffs that sends visitors through a narrow rock walkway. Don’t worry, most travelers are able to fit through the walkway!

A visit to Cantwell Cliffs is an absolute must during your stay at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. Not only is the hike a peaceful and enjoyable journey, but the attraction itself is something you won’t soon forget. Don’t forget your cameras!

More Places to See in Hocking Hills State Park

Conkle’s Hollow

While exploring Hocking Hills, Conkle’s Hollow is an attraction you don’t want to miss! Located in an Ohio Nature Preserve, the attraction was named after W.J. Conkle, who carved his name and the date 1797 into the sandstone on the west wall of the gorge. Conkle’s Hollow consists of steep sandstone cliffs that rise nearly 200 feet above the ground. This is an easy journey and stretches only 1-mile roundtrip. There is also a wonderful 2 ½ mile long hiking trail that travels along the rim of the hollow.

Rock Bridge

Rock Bridge in the Hocking Hills is among one of the most unusual yet fascinating formations in the park. It is also where you’ll find one of the most stunning Hocking Hills waterfalls! As the name suggests, this waterfall flows under a natural bridge, giving it a unique look. If you are arriving by canoe, you can easily pull your canoe to the shore and hike to the falls from the river.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is named for large amounts of ashes that early settlers discovered in the cave. The settlers believed that Native Americans used Ash Cave for their shelter and the ashes were from the campfires. In addition to the enormous 700 -foot long cave, the Hocking Hills State Park attraction also boasts a magnificent waterfall at its center. In the winter, visitors travel to Ash Cave to see the breathtaking frozen waterfall.

With scenic forest trails, vast gorges, and picturesque lakes, it’s no wonder Hocking Hills is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is surrounded on three sides by Hocking Hills State Park, meaning you’ll never be far from the best sightseeing in the area. If you are one of our explorative guests, you shouldn’t miss a Hocking Hills waterfalls excursion. There are many beautiful waterfalls to see in Hocking Hills State Park, but these are our personal favorites!

5 Hocking Hills Waterfalls That You Must See

  1. Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the largest in terms of water volume. Spanning over 50 feet, Cedar Falls looks much bigger in person than in pictures. From the top, water slides down a massive chunk of sandstone, splits in the middle and then meets up again before plunging into a pool. This creates a rather unique looking cascade. After enjoying this wonder, make your way to the large rocky beach area at the base of the falls for some well-deserved relaxation.

  1. Big Spring Hollow Falls

At over 100 feet, Big Spring Hollow Falls is one of the highest, if not the highest, waterfall in the Hocking Hills area. It provides a wispy curtain of spray and is at least 10 feet wide. Reaching this waterfall is a workout, so come prepared to trek a good distance. Visitation of Big Spring Hollow Falls is available only to those with a permit only. Contact the state park in advance to apply for yours!

  1. Rockbridge Falls

As the name suggests, this waterfall flows under a natural bridge, giving it a unique look. Rockbridge Falls only has water flowing occasionally. However, the combination of natural features makes it worth a visit. The falls and bridge are found in the Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, which is located at the end of Dalton Road. If you are arriving by canoe, you can easily pull your canoe to the shore and hike to the falls from the river. Be sure to make time for this beautiful waterfall!

  1. Cantwell Cliffs

Cantwell Cliffs in Hocking Hills is one of the most remote trails in the park. However, many visitors have stated that it is well worth the journey. Along the way, you will have the chance to see many Hocking Hills waterfalls and a number of other wonderful natural attractions.

  1. Ash Cave

Ash Cave, located in the Hocking Hills State Park, is named for large amounts of ashes that early settlers discovered in the cave. The settlers believed that Native Americans used Ash Cave for their shelter and the ashes were from the campfires. In addition to the enormous 700 -foot long cave, the Hocking Hills State Park attraction also boasts a stunning waterfall at its center. In the winter, visitors travel to Ash Cave to see the breathtaking frozen waterfall. It is a perfect day trip for any time of year, and its location near the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls makes it even more so.

Before the first settlers arrived in Hocking Hills, three Native American tribes made their homes near the Hocking River. The abundance of fish, turtles, and clams made the river a vital supplier of food for these tribes. Today, the Hocking River is still one of the best local fishing spots. Anglers can cast their lines in hopes of catching a wide variety of fish species, and you’re invited to do the same. Here is everything you need to know about enjoying a relaxing and memorable Hocking River fishing trip!

Hocking River Fish Species

The Hocking River, connected to the popular Clear Creek, boasts an ample population of freshwater fish. The mid and upper portions of the river have an impressive amount of smallmouth bass, and typical midwest species like channel catfish, white crappie, quillback, sauger, and more have also been spotted. Although the prime time for fishing is in the spring, summer fishermen usually find luck along the shore. The fish tend to hide in shaded areas with maximum covering, where the cooler waters are located.

Hocking River Fishing Points

Five miles of waterway is used for public fly fishing at Clear Creek Metro Park. You’ll find marked parking lots and signs leading to these access points. You can also reach the Hocking River by traveling down the creek in Clear Creek Metro Park.

Obtaining a Fishing License

In order to legally fish in the Hocking River, you will need to obtain a state fishing license. Here are four locations near the river that provide licenses to visitors.

Other Activities on Hocking River

If fishing isn’t your forte, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy on the Hocking River. Here are just a couple of our favorites!

River Trips

With an average depth of only 3 to 4 feet, the Hocking River is generally calm and is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and tubing in the summertime. Both Hocking Hills Adventures and the Hocking Hills Canoe Livery offer a variety of scenic trips for all skill levels. Our inn can pack a brown bag lunch for you to enjoy while on your journey. Canoe tours provide a peaceful, calm ride through the trees, and kayaks are fast and easier to maneuver – just be careful not to tip over! There are also points where you can pull your canoe on the shore and explore the Natural Rock Bridge just a short walk away.

Camping

Guests can also spend a weekend roughing it on the Hocking River. One of the most popular areas for Hocking Hills camping is the Riverside Campground, where visitors can enjoy over 80 large sites complete with picnic tables, fire rings, and nearby flushing toilets. Many of the sites offer swimming access and are close to the Fun Center, which features mini-golf, go-karts, a driving range, arcade, grills, shelter houses, and a picnic facility.
