What is a Yurt?

Yurts are circular shelters that were used for centuries by Central Asian nomads. There are several variations of the basic design and different names used for the structure. The Ger and the bentwood yurt (also known as the Üy) were the most common. The Mongolian Ger is one of the oldest designs and known for its relatively heavy center ring and straight rafters. The design of these yurts inspired the modern Pacific-style yurts that you’ll find at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. Our modernized version of these yurts are made of beautiful Douglas fir, wrapped in NASA-developed reflective insulation, and covered in with architectural fabric. The wood rafters lead upward into the central dome creating an open, spacious feeling with an abundance of natural light. They are truly a marvel to behold and even better to stay in!

About Our Yurts

Yurt Camping OhioOur custom designed Hocking Hills yurts combine the very best experiences of refined cabin life and tent camping. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the comforting sounds, sights, and smells of nature without sacrificing the luxuries you’d find at most hotels and resorts. Each 20-foot diameter yurt has a king-size bed or two twin beds, full bathroom with a tiled shower, comfortable reading rockers, gas log stove, microwave/under counter refrigerator, a wood deck and more. Plus, they are heated and air-conditioned for year round use!

You may find that our yurts do not have a TV. This gives you the chance to truly live in the moment and enjoy your memorable glamping experience with your loved ones. At night, you’ll don’t forget to gaze up at an entire sky of sparkling stars right from your bed! It’s the cherry-on-top of a truly perfect yurt camping in Ohio getaway.

More About Christmas in Ash Cave

Christmas in Ash CaveAsk a local about the best features in Hocking Hills State Park, and you’ll likely hear about Ash Cave. This attraction is the largest, most impressive recess cave in Ohio. The approach to Ash Cave is through a gorge, which is lined with massive hemlocks, beech trees, and other impressive hardwoods. In the wintertime, the valley is covered with snow, and icicles dangle from the cave’s tremendous overhanging ledge. It’s truly a sight to behold, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

The Christmas in Ash Cave event is held on December 9, 2017,  from 5 to 7 p.m. This year’s program begins with an unguided lantern walk along a paved, handicap-accessible trail to the cave. Once in the cave, families can visit with Santa, sit around the campfire, sip hot chocolate, and munch on cookies. You can also listen to carolers and join in on your favorite holiday hymns. With views of snow-covered trees and a cascading waterfall deep in the gorge, this special event is a must-see for visitors of all ages. Plus, the trail is paved and handicap accessible, making it easy for everyone to enjoy!

What to Bring

Christmas in Ash Cave is an outdoor winter activity, so it’s important to be ready for snow and cold weather. Remember to pack basic winter clothing like waterproof boots, a heavy jacket, gloves, and a hat or beanie to keep your head warm. We also suggest bringing a large blanket to share with your family or significant other. It’s the perfect way to cozy up with the ones you love!

The fall season is a truly enchanting time of year in the Hocking Hills. With crisp weather and stunning scenery, there are many ways to experience the natural beauty of our region this autumn. One activity we highly recommend to our guests at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is taking a journey down the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway. This historic route takes visitors deep into the hills of southeast Ohio while introducing them to some of the area’s crown jewels. Here’s what you need to know about enjoying the byway and things you’ll see along the way!

Find even more local activities and attractions like the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway in our free Vacation Guide! This planning tool is the best way to find all the best things to do during your trip to our area.

More About the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway

The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway is a 26.4-mile self-guided tour along State Route 374. In addition to some of the most stunning sights in the Hocking Hills, travelers will also have the chance to see significant historic sites. For these reasons, it is known as one of the best scenic drives in Ohio. It is also a fantastic way for visitors to experience the vibrant fall foliage and capture postcard-worthy photos. The adventure begins on State Route 374 on US 33 in Rockbridge. As you travel from north to south, here are some of the attractions you’ll find along the way!

Cantwell Cliffs

The Cantwell Cliffs were created by erosion caused by Buck Run River. As you explore, you’ll find fascinating reddish-brown stone in the cliffs, a rock shelter, a beautiful valley floor, and the popular Fat Woman’s Squeeze.

Conkle’s Hollow

Located in an Ohio Nature Preserve, Conkle’s Hollow was named after W.J. Conkle, who carved his name and the date 1797 into the sandstone on the west wall of the gorge. Conkle’s Hollow consists of steep sandstone cliffs that rise nearly 200 feet above the ground.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is named for large amounts of ashes that early settlers discovered in the cave. The settlers believed that Native Americans used Ash Cave for their shelter and the ashes were from the campfires. In addition to the enormous 700 -foot long cave, the Hocking Hills State Park attraction also boasts a magnificent waterfall at its center. In the winter, visitors travel to Ash Cave to see the breathtaking frozen waterfall.

Hocking Hills State Forest Headquarters

In the 1930’s, this destination was a house to prisoners who were not a flight risk. These men were expected to plant trees, fight forest fires, and help take care of the parks. This gave prisoners the chance to learn new skills while spending time in the outdoors.

Black Civilian Conservation Corps Camp

Although there isn’t much left of the camp, visiting the remains can be a fascinating history lesson. The men of this organization planted trees, created trails, and many structures that you can still find in the Hocking Hills today.

Village of Mound Crossing

Located at mile 11.9, this ancient mound was created in the backyard of a farmhouse that was built by the Hopewell Indians before the birth of Christ.

With the fall season right around the corner, visitors are filling their calendars with all the fun-filled events coming to the Hocking Hills. One of these events is the Circleville Pumpkin Show, an annual festival that has been celebrated each year since 1903! As one of the most highly-attended fall festivals in the Hocking Hills, it is well worth the 45-minute journey from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls! Here is what you need to know about the Circleville Pumpkin Show and why you’ll want to make it a tradition every year!

Interested in more events like the Circleville Pumpkin Show? Then you won’t want to be without our free Hocking Hills Vacation Guide! This handy tool will help you plan the ultimate getaway without the stress or extensive research.

History of the Circleville Pumpkin Show

The Circleville Pumpkin Show got its start as a humble street fair. In the early 1900s, the Mayor of Circleville and the superintendent of the water works conceived the idea and held a small exhibit on West Main Street. The exhibit mainly consisted of pumpkins and corn fodder carved into jack-o-lanterns, all of which were responsible for earning the name “pumpkin show.”

Throughout the years, more and more attractions were added to the show, including merchants and a merry-go-round. Attendance spiked and the city knew they had a successful event on their hands. In 1946, a non-profit organization called the Circleville Pumpkin Show was formed and took over all operations of the festival. Their main goal was to create an event that brought the community together and to create a festival known as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth.” Even today, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is an astounding success that attracts thousands of visitors per year for four days of autumn fun.

What to Expect at the Circleville Pumpkin Show

There is something for everyone of any age to enjoy at this Hocking Hills fall festival! Whether you seek adrenaline, delicious food, live music, or unique entertainment, boredom is never an option. Here are just some of the fabulous events and attractions at the Circleville Pumpkin Show that you won’t want to miss!

  • Miss Pumpkin Show
  • Little Miss Pumpkin Show
  • Pet Parade
  • Concessions and Carnival Rides
  • Pumpkin Show Community Band Concert
  • Pumpkin Size Contest

Circleville Pumpkin Show Food

If you’re hoping to satisfy your sweet tooth at the festival, then you won’t be disappointed! Some of our personal favorite treats are the warm pumpkin and cinnamon donuts. Wittich’s Candy Store also has wonderful handmade candy, pumpkin crème in dark or milk chocolate, and any kind of candy you can imagine. Lindsay’s Bakery is the home of the largest pumpkin pie, which you’ll have to see to believe. Another unique selection is the festival’s pumpkin burgers, which are very similar to a sloppy joe!

Tips for Attending the Circleville Pumpkin Show

If you want to avoid the crowds, attending the festival on a weekday is a must! The event is usually packed on the weekends and on Friday nights. Parking is available, but since the event is so popular the lots can fill up fast! Check surrounding neighborhoods as many people open up their own properties for festival attendees.

How to Navigate the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills

There are 26 sections to the trail, each named for a town within the section of the state. The best part? Each part of the trail offers its own unique experiences. The blue blaze marks on the trees along the Buckeye Trail make the routes distinguishable for hikers. A single blaze signals parts on the trail where the route is fairly straight, and a double blaze signals a turn, with the upper blaze marking the direction. Visitors should be aware that some of the marks have been faded, so we recommend using a Buckeye Trail map to help you stay on track.

Where to Explore

There are three consecutive sections of the Buckeye Trail that winds around the Hocking Hills area.  These sections are located just minutes from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. The first is the New Straitsville section, which passes through Wayne National Forest on its way to Old Man’s Cave. Next is the Old Man’s Cave section, which features views of Lake Logan State Park, Hocking State Forest, Conkle’s Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave. Finally, the Scioto Trail section of the Buckeye Trail travels through the scenic Tar Hollow State Forest, where you can admire deep ravines and dense woodlands.

What to Bring With You on the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills

When planning your day on the Buckeye Trail, there are a few essentials that will help you make the most out of your journey. Footwear is one of the most important things to remember! If you plan to hike on more challenging trails, a classic type of hiking boot is ideal. But if you plan to hike mainly flat trails with occasional inclines, a good pair of walking shoes will do just fine. In addition, we recommend dressing in light layers. That way, you can stay comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Last but not least, be sure to pack a water bottle and a few snacks, and your camera!

About Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

While Corkscrew Falls is not among the most visited attractions, people who have seen the falls have admitted it is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire park! Just a few years ago, the 10-foot waterfall rested on private property and was unavailable to the public. Today, visitors with a permit are able to view the falls and all of its natural splendor. Corkscrew Falls is a part of the 607-acre Boch Hollow Nature Preserve, so you know you’ll see plenty of beautiful sights and wildlife along the way.

Corkscrew Falls, Ohio Permit

Due to the area’s fragile ecosystem, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires a permit for all Corkscrew Falls visitors. Luckily, these permits are very easy to acquire. Simply visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s website for permit guidelines and applications. Please note that these permits can take up to 30 days to process, so plan accordingly and apply in advance!

How to Find Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

You’ll find the trailhead for Corkscrew Falls at the corner of Zwinkle Road and OH-664. If you’re in need of parking, you’ll find a small paved shoulder nearby. The beginning of the half mile trail is marked by a sign that reads “This is Ohio Dept of Natural Preserves property. You must have a permit to be on this land.” From here, follow the trail down the creek. A large rock wall will keep you on the trail, so you won’t have to worry about getting lost.
