With the fall season right around the corner, visitors are filling their calendars with all the fun-filled events coming to the Hocking Hills. One of these events is the Circleville Pumpkin Show, an annual festival that has been celebrated each year since 1903! As one of the most highly-attended fall festivals in the Hocking Hills, it is well worth the 45-minute journey from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls! Here is what you need to know about the Circleville Pumpkin Show and why you’ll want to make it a tradition every year!

Interested in more events like the Circleville Pumpkin Show? Then you won’t want to be without our free Hocking Hills Vacation Guide! This handy tool will help you plan the ultimate getaway without the stress or extensive research.

History of the Circleville Pumpkin Show

The Circleville Pumpkin Show got its start as a humble street fair. In the early 1900s, the Mayor of Circleville and the superintendent of the water works conceived the idea and held a small exhibit on West Main Street. The exhibit mainly consisted of pumpkins and corn fodder carved into jack-o-lanterns, all of which were responsible for earning the name “pumpkin show.”

Throughout the years, more and more attractions were added to the show, including merchants and a merry-go-round. Attendance spiked and the city knew they had a successful event on their hands. In 1946, a non-profit organization called the Circleville Pumpkin Show was formed and took over all operations of the festival. Their main goal was to create an event that brought the community together and to create a festival known as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth.” Even today, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is an astounding success that attracts thousands of visitors per year for four days of autumn fun.

What to Expect at the Circleville Pumpkin Show

There is something for everyone of any age to enjoy at this Hocking Hills fall festival! Whether you seek adrenaline, delicious food, live music, or unique entertainment, boredom is never an option. Here are just some of the fabulous events and attractions at the Circleville Pumpkin Show that you won’t want to miss!

  • Miss Pumpkin Show
  • Little Miss Pumpkin Show
  • Pet Parade
  • Concessions and Carnival Rides
  • Pumpkin Show Community Band Concert
  • Pumpkin Size Contest

Circleville Pumpkin Show Food

If you’re hoping to satisfy your sweet tooth at the festival, then you won’t be disappointed! Some of our personal favorite treats are the warm pumpkin and cinnamon donuts. Wittich’s Candy Store also has wonderful handmade candy, pumpkin crème in dark or milk chocolate, and any kind of candy you can imagine. Lindsay’s Bakery is the home of the largest pumpkin pie, which you’ll have to see to believe. Another unique selection is the festival’s pumpkin burgers, which are very similar to a sloppy joe!

Tips for Attending the Circleville Pumpkin Show

If you want to avoid the crowds, attending the festival on a weekday is a must! The event is usually packed on the weekends and on Friday nights. Parking is available, but since the event is so popular the lots can fill up fast! Check surrounding neighborhoods as many people open up their own properties for festival attendees.

Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the Hocking Hills, and for good reason! With dozens of hiking trails to choose from, each leading to a unique destination, you can spend days blazing the trails in our region. If you’re searching for a challenging yet memorable hiking experience during your stay at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls, you’re in luck! The famous Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills is a 1,400+ mile hiking trail that winds around Ohio and reaches into every corner of the state. As the longest circular trail in the nation, this diverse route passes through some of Ohio’s most scenic regions. This includes the picturesque Hocking Hills and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The best part? It’s one of the least crowded trails in the region, meaning you’ll enjoy a peaceful and relatively uninterrupted journey into nature. Whether you plan to take a rigorous hike or a leisurely stroll, spending a day on the Buckeye Trail is the perfect way to relax, get some fresh air, and learn about Ohio’s rich history.

Discover more local hiking trails like the Buckeye Trail in Hocking Hills when you request our free Vacation Guide! This handy planning tool helps you find all the best recommendations for local attractions, activities, dining, and more. No stress required!

How to Navigate the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills

There are 26 sections to the trail, each named for a town within the section of the state. The best part? Each part of the trail offers its own unique experiences. The blue blaze marks on the trees along the Buckeye Trail make the routes distinguishable for hikers. A single blaze signals parts on the trail where the route is fairly straight, and a double blaze signals a turn, with the upper blaze marking the direction. Visitors should be aware that some of the marks have been faded, so we recommend using a Buckeye Trail map to help you stay on track.

Where to Explore

There are three consecutive sections of the Buckeye Trail that winds around the Hocking Hills area.  These sections are located just minutes from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. The first is the New Straitsville section, which passes through Wayne National Forest on its way to Old Man’s Cave. Next is the Old Man’s Cave section, which features views of Lake Logan State Park, Hocking State Forest, Conkle’s Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave. Finally, the Scioto Trail section of the Buckeye Trail travels through the scenic Tar Hollow State Forest, where you can admire deep ravines and dense woodlands.

What to Bring With You on the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills

When planning your day on the Buckeye Trail, there are a few essentials that will help you make the most out of your journey. Footwear is one of the most important things to remember! If you plan to hike on more challenging trails, a classic type of hiking boot is ideal. But if you plan to hike mainly flat trails with occasional inclines, a good pair of walking shoes will do just fine. In addition, we recommend dressing in light layers. That way, you can stay comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Last but not least, be sure to pack a water bottle and a few snacks, and your camera!

Ready for Your Adventure? Book Your Stay With the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls

After your adventure down the Buckeye Trail in Hocking Hills, return to the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls for some well-deserved relaxation. About Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

While Corkscrew Falls is not among the most visited attractions, people who have seen the falls have admitted it is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire park! Just a few years ago, the 10-foot waterfall rested on private property and was unavailable to the public. Today, visitors with a permit are able to view the falls and all of its natural splendor. Corkscrew Falls is a part of the 607-acre Boch Hollow Nature Preserve, so you know you’ll see plenty of beautiful sights and wildlife along the way.

Corkscrew Falls, Ohio Permit

Due to the area’s fragile ecosystem, The Ohio Department of Natural Resources requires a permit for all Corkscrew Falls visitors. Luckily, these permits are very easy to acquire. Simply visit the Ohio Department of Natural Resource’s website for permit guidelines and applications. Please note that these permits can take up to 30 days to process, so plan accordingly and apply in advance!

How to Find Corkscrew Falls in the Hocking Hills

You’ll find the trailhead for Corkscrew Falls at the corner of Zwinkle Road and OH-664. If you’re in need of parking, you’ll find a small paved shoulder nearby. The beginning of the half mile trail is marked by a sign that reads “This is Ohio Dept of Natural Preserves property. You must have a permit to be on this land.” From here, follow the trail down the creek. A large rock wall will keep you on the trail, so you won’t have to worry about getting lost. Once you reach the falls, you may enter the knee-deep water to capture the perfect photo.

About Old Man’s Cave

Old Man’s Cave derives its name from Richard Rowe, a hermit who lived under the rock shelter in the early 1800s. His family moved to Ohio from the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Shortly after, Richard stumbled upon the Hocking Region while traveling along the Scioto River.

He lived out his life in the area and is buried beneath the ledge of the main recess cave.

Other residents of the cave were two brothers, Nathaniel and Pat Rayon, who came to the area in 1795. Both brothers are buried near the cave. Old Man’s Cave also served as a stopover for the Shawnee Indians on their route from West Virginia to villages along the Scioto River.

2 of the Best Things to Do at Old Man’s Cave

  1. Hiking

The Old Man’s Cave area can be divided into five sections: Upper Falls, Upper Gorge, Middle Falls, Lower Falls, and Lower Gorge. The magnificent gorge cuts through Blackhand sandstone and serves an opportunity for visitors to peer into the earth’s subsurface. The main hiking trail starts at the Welcome Center and takes a relatively straight route through the gorge to Old Man’s Cave. The trail then continues to the Sphinx Head and Overlook rock formations. Whispering Cave, one of the Hocking Hills’ newest attractions, is also accessible from the hiking trails. With plenty of man-made steps and bridges along the way, this route is a relatively easy stroll for visitors of all skill levels.

  1. Annual Events

If you’re planning to visit Ohio in the winter, make plans to attend the annual Hocking Hills Winter Hike. This guided six-mile trek takes hikers from Old Man’s Cave to Ash Cave and features plenty of fascinating stories along the way. Layered clothing and good footwear are recommended.

Three sides of our inn are bordered by Hocking Hills State Park, meaning there are many incredible places to explore just minutes from our door. Most of our guests come to see us for the nearby forests, trails, and attractions in the park, including the Cantwell Cliffs. While the journey to the cliffs is approximately half a mile, we guarantee that once you get there, you’ll agree that the trip was well worth it.

Find an abundance of trails and other attractions like the Cantwell Cliffs in our free Hocking Hills State Park Guide! This downloadable planning tool is filled with places to see, helpful maps, and more!

Why You Should See the Cantwell Cliffs During Your Visit

In order to reach the Cantwell Cliffs, visitors must endure a 40-minute hike through the park. However, many find that the journey to the cliffs is half the fun! With stunning wildflowers (especially in the spring), and a variety of local trees lining the path, you’ll have plenty to look at during the hike.

When you arrive at the cliffs, the astonishing beauty is sure to steal your breath away! You will see the erosion caused by Buck Run River, a rock shelter, beautiful valley floor, and fascinating reddish-brown stone. Cantwell Cliffs are also the home of Fat Woman’s Squeeze in the Hocking Hills. This walkway is part of a rugged trail near the cliffs that sends visitors through a narrow rock walkway. Don’t worry, most travelers are able to fit through the walkway!

A visit to Cantwell Cliffs is an absolute must during your stay at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. Not only is the hike a peaceful and enjoyable journey, but the attraction itself is something you won’t soon forget. Don’t forget your cameras!

More Places to See in Hocking Hills State Park

Conkle’s Hollow

While exploring Hocking Hills, Conkle’s Hollow is an attraction you don’t want to miss! Located in an Ohio Nature Preserve, the attraction was named after W.J. Conkle, who carved his name and the date 1797 into the sandstone on the west wall of the gorge. Conkle’s Hollow consists of steep sandstone cliffs that rise nearly 200 feet above the ground. This is an easy journey and stretches only 1-mile roundtrip. There is also a wonderful 2 ½ mile long hiking trail that travels along the rim of the hollow.

Rock Bridge

Rock Bridge in the Hocking Hills is among one of the most unusual yet fascinating formations in the park. It is also where you’ll find one of the most stunning Hocking Hills waterfalls! As the name suggests, this waterfall flows under a natural bridge, giving it a unique look. If you are arriving by canoe, you can easily pull your canoe to the shore and hike to the falls from the river.

Ash Cave

Ash Cave is named for large amounts of ashes that early settlers discovered in the cave. The settlers believed that Native Americans used Ash Cave for their shelter and the ashes were from the campfires. In addition to the enormous 700 -foot long cave, the Hocking Hills State Park attraction also boasts a magnificent waterfall at its center. In the winter, visitors travel to Ash Cave to see the breathtaking frozen waterfall.
