How to Navigate the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills
There are 26 sections to the trail, each named for a town within the section of the state. The best part? Each part of the trail offers its own unique experiences. The blue blaze marks on the trees along the Buckeye Trail make the routes distinguishable for hikers. A single blaze signals parts on the trail where the route is fairly straight, and a double blaze signals a turn, with the upper blaze marking the direction. Visitors should be aware that some of the marks have been faded, so we recommend using a Buckeye Trail map to help you stay on track.
Where to Explore
There are three consecutive sections of the Buckeye Trail that winds around the Hocking Hills area. These sections are located just minutes from the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls. The first is the New Straitsville section, which passes through Wayne National Forest on its way to Old Man’s Cave. Next is the Old Man’s Cave section, which features views of Lake Logan State Park, Hocking State Forest, Conkle’s Hollow, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave. Finally, the Scioto Trail section of the Buckeye Trail travels through the scenic Tar Hollow State Forest, where you can admire deep ravines and dense woodlands.
What to Bring With You on the Buckeye Trail in the Hocking Hills
When planning your day on the Buckeye Trail, there are a few essentials that will help you make the most out of your journey. Footwear is one of the most important things to remember! If you plan to hike on more challenging trails, a classic type of hiking boot is ideal. But if you plan to hike mainly flat trails with occasional inclines, a good pair of walking shoes will do just fine. In addition, we recommend dressing in light layers.
