Brief History
General William Tecumseh Sherman is best known for leading troops through various southern cities during the Civil War. He was one of 11 children born to parents Charles and Mary Sherman, and spent his childhood at their home in Lancaster. The home has multiple bedrooms, a kitchen, parlor, and study, and each has been restored to look the way they would have when the Sherman family was living there. Guests will be able to feel the history and authenticity of the home from the minute they walk in the door.
Upon touring the home, guests can venture to an upstairs bedroom dedicated to family memorabilia or to another bedroom that hosts a re-creation of General Sherman’s Civil War field tent. Yet another room has an exhibit of Civil War artifacts, guns, and other fascinating memorabilia that guests are welcome to touch and explore. Various photographs and paintings will make visitors feel like they’ve stepped back in time.
After the tour, guests are welcome to browse the Sherman House Museum shop. They’ll find an eclectic selection of history books, clothing, puzzles, games, and gifts that showcase the history and culture of this interesting home.
